The Algonquins of the First Nations peoples used the land that is now present-day Etobicoke, ON for fishing and growing crops in the summer. In winter, they would hunt farther afield in the time before the area was included in the Toronto Purchase of 1787. Immigrant settlers and British veterans of the Revolutionary War, who were given property for their service, were among those who took up residence along Etobicoke Creek establishing the town.

Rib Fest, held every year on Canada Day, is a major event for the community, bringing in visitors from all over Canada for a long weekend with entertainment, food, a midway and music at Centennial Park.
