Starkey Genesis AI: Redefining the Hearing Aid Experience

by | Jul 13, 2023 | Hearing Aids, Patient Resources, Technology

Here at Port Credit Audiology, we’re always staying up to date with the latest hearing technology. I’m particularly excited about the Starkey Genesis AI, which is expected to be released in late July or early August.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has become quite the hot topic lately, and it’s exciting to see the technology being used to help people hear better.

Let’s dive into all we know about this exciting new hearing aid from Starkey.

What’s So Exciting About Starkey Genesis AI?

Starkey, a leading hearing aid manufacturer, claims that their new Starkey Genesis AI hearing aids bring the most significant changes to hearing aid technology ever.

These hearing aids promise all new everything. One of the most exciting changes is this hearing aid’s new engine.

Starkey’s Neuro Processor leverages AI in order to understand speech in quiet and loud environments. It’s also promised to be power-efficient.

According to Starkey, these revolutionary hearing aids mimic your brain’s cerebral cortex and “fill in the gaps” when your hearing is impaired.

Starkey claims that this technology makes over 80 million personalized adjustments each hour to deliver true-to-life sound quality.

Here are some of the features that make this new technology so exciting:
  • This mini receiver-in-canal hearing aid (RIC) is truly mini. Many manufacturers call hearing aids mini when they really aren’t.
  • The battery life is up to 51 hours. This ensures that users are never without battery power. And as the hearing aid ages, there are no battery life issues.
  • Up to 8 days of life for a size 10 battery for smaller products such as complete in the canal and invisible hearing aids. This is 60% more than the typical average.
  • They’re rated as waterproof.
  • They utilize advanced AI in the form of deep neural networks for sound processing and other features to improve clarity of speech.
  • They come with health and safety features like activity tracking and fall detection.

Dario’s Take on This New Technology

I actually had the opportunity to experience the new Starkey Genesis AI firsthand at Starkey’s recent product launch. Here are my thoughts:

Sound Quality
I believe that a great hearing aid first and foremost starts with good sound quality. The primary complaint that hearing aid users have is that they’re not able to hear when there’s background noise. The Genesis AI’s Neuro Processor promises to allow people to hear softer sounds while letting in louder sounds, like music, without distortion.

The use of AI and deep neural networks could be the next big thing in improving the noise reduction capabilities of hearing aids. And if that’s not enough, Edge Mode puts the user in control if they need additional noise reduction or speech improvement capabilities.

Battery Life
The Genesis AI hearing aids have exceptional battery life. As the hearing industry moves toward rechargeable devices, one of the most common questions we hear from our patients is “How long will the battery last?” Having extended battery life is helpful day-to-day, but it also ensures that there are no significant changes to wearability over time. And for users who prefer a custom hearing aid, these improvements also apply to custom products.
Waterproof Capability
Starkey’s Pro8 Hydrashield offers eight levels of protection against moisture—making the Genesis AI waterproof. Since users are wearing their devices daily and depend on them, it’s important that they’re durable and reliable. Ensuring that the hearing aid is waterproof alleviates concern about getting it wet or sweating too much. At the end of the day, keeping hearing aids functioning with minimal downtime for manufacturer or clinic repairs is exciting for everyone.
My Starkey App
I like that Starkey took the time to research the needs and wants of app users to develop an app that’s easy to use. The new My Starkey app is an improvement to their previous app. It has a more simplified user experience and visual cues for those who need them. It allows users to make changes to their hearing aids such as adjusting the volume, program, and noise reduction level. Users can also check how many steps they have taken for the day.
New ProFit Software
As a provider, a manufacturer’s fitting software is vital for the correct programming of a hearing aid. Starkey’s redesigned software allows for better control over the hearing devices and has an easy-to-follow process. When a clinician is given more control, they are better able to customize the hearing aids to a user’s needs.

I believe that the changes to both the hearing aids and the My Starkey app will greatly improve the experience of wearers. As an Audiologist, I’m looking forward to fitting patients with this new product when it’s officially released.

Who Is Starkey Genesis AI Right For?

This technology is right for everyone! This new release has a hearing aid for every individual with mild to profound hearing loss.

Overall, on a scale of 1-10, I give Starkey Genesis AI hearing aids a solid 9. The reason they don’t get a full 10 is because some users still like to have a disposable battery option, and that is not an option with the RIC style. However, the overall technology for a hearing aid user and Audiologist is fantastic.

Want to Try Starkey Genesis AI?

If you think this new technology might be right for you, the first step to getting fitted is to schedule an appointment for a hearing test and hearing aid evaluation. This will allow our team to understand your lifestyle, needs, and budget so that we can recommend the best options for your unique hearing loss.
