Where to Get Your Hearing Tested in Mississauga

by | Nov 15, 2023 | Hearing Test, Patient Resources

There’s no shortage of places to have your hearing tested in today’s world, whether through an online hearing test, questionnaire or a “free assessment” at your local clinic.

But in the same way that you wouldn’t rely on the internet or a medical professional that offers “no-fee appointments” to make a complex medical decision, the same should be true when it comes to your hearing healthcare.

In a world filled with options, it’s crucial to understand the differences between various types of hearing tests and assessments so you can choose the one that best serves your needs.

Let’s delve into the distinctions between free hearing tests and comprehensive hearing assessments and why you should consider the latter for a more holistic understanding of your hearing health.

Free Hearing Tests

Many clinics offer free hearing tests through their websites or in person, promising to help you “understand the full nature of your current hearing health.”

While these tests can serve as an initial screening tool, it’s important to recognize their limitations. Free hearing tests are typically designed to simply identify whether you have a hearing loss and if you’re a candidate for hearing aids.

However, they often lack the depth required to pinpoint the root causes of hearing issues, detect underlying medical conditions or include other advanced testing evaluating what treatments would be successful.

There are many unfortunate stories within our industry of people getting simple hearing tests, which result in the test suggesting there are hearing challenges. Yet the reality is that the reason for their reduced levels of hearing is actually a buildup of earwax or a more complex medical challenge that is missed.

In most cases, “free hearing tests” are offered to entice people to get their hearing tested with the hope they are a candidate for a hearing aid. Those truly looking to get a sense of their overall hearing health should seek out a diagnostic clinic offering comprehensive hearing assessments.

Comprehensive Hearing Assessments

A comprehensive hearing assessment is a more thorough approach to understanding your hearing health. It goes beyond merely confirming hearing loss, as it aims to uncover the underlying factors contributing to your specific hearing challenges.

During a comprehensive hearing assessment, a Doctor of Audiology employs various advanced techniques to gain a comprehensive understanding of your hearing health.

Some of these techniques include:

Video Otoscopy:

This tool provides a live, magnified view of your ear canal and eardrum. It’s invaluable for visualizing and understanding your ear health, including identifying conditions or obstructions in real-time.

Tympanometry:

This non-invasive test assesses the function of your middle ear by measuring the movement of the eardrum. It can detect issues such as fluid buildup, eardrum perforations or problems with the Eustachian tube, which might be affecting your hearing.

Speech-in-Noise Testing:

This specialized assessment evaluates your ability to understand speech in noisy environments, which is a common challenge for individuals with a hearing impairment. Unlike tests conducted in silent settings, speech-in-noise testing mimics real-life scenarios, such as conversations in a busy restaurant or street.

If you’re looking to have your hearing tested accurately with a focus on your long-term health, then it’s recommended to choose a comprehensive hearing assessment over a free hearing test/screening.

A comprehensive hearing assessment allows for a more in-depth examination of your hearing health, potentially identifying issues that could go unnoticed with a cursory test. We have provided hearing assessments for many patients who had a free hearing test in the past, and they always highlight how different our test was.
