Hear for the Holidays is our annual holidays initiative, aimed at granting one deserving community member the chance to reconnect with the world through complimentary hearing care that they previously couldn’t access.
This isn’t merely a giveaway but an opportunity to lift spirits, reunite families and enrich lives during a season of giving.
Thanks to your incredible participation and moving stories, choosing just one recipient was a challenge! But one story stood out, capturing the essence of perseverance and love that runs through this initiative each year.
Meet Our Winner: Dalerest “Dal” George
Dalerest “Dal” George was born on a chilly day in December 1953, marking the beginning of a life filled with trials and triumphs. Soon after birth, baby Dal encountered an illness, speculated today as a form of meningitis, that began her lifelong struggle with hearing.
Despite these early challenges, Dal thrived. She has called Mississauga home for over four decades, nurturing two children and now delighting in her role as a grandmother to three.
Known for her generosity and kindness, Dal’s hands have tirelessly cooked, baked, sewn and crocheted for friends and family alike.
Her cherished dishes, like her famous Christmas ham and cinnamon raisin buns, have long been the staples of family gatherings.
Yet her journey has not been without heartache. Earlier this year, Dal faced the passing of her beloved mother, whom she cared for lovingly despite her own battle with kidney disease.
As life insists on change, her son also ventured across the country to Alberta, making distant family connections even more vital. It is in these quiet moments over phone calls and video chats that Dal’s yearning to hear clearly has become more profound.
Dal’s nomination from her daughter Andrea touched our hearts, and we knew we had our winner in hand.
Dal’s Winning Experience
When we met Dal and Andrea at our clinic, their warmth and sincerity were immediately evident.
Andrea poignantly described her mother’s battle with hearing clarity, especially within crowded environments or when watching TV, often relying on closed captioning. Dal had tried hearing aids in the past, but inadequate support dissuaded her from continued use, leaving her isolated during everyday interactions.
Proper care throughout the hearing journey is crucial; while fitting Dal with the latest Starkey Edge RIC hearing aids equipped with Edge Mode+ capabilities, we aimed to renew her world with sound.
These devices have redefined her daily experiences, and whether communicating in person or across a screen, each interaction now rings with clarity and joy.
A beautiful testament to community spirit occurred on a day brimming with sweetness when Dal and Andrea came bearing gifts for us, sharing local favourites in gratitude, echoing our support of community ties.
